Choose the names for ionic compounds below. You might need a table of polyatomic ions.

Select one choice per compound and then submit your answer.

K2SO4

The name of an ionic compound consists of the cation name plus the anion name. For example, Na2SO3 is made of a cation sodium and an anion sulfite, hence the name is sodium sulfite. In KHSO4 the cation is potassium and the anion is hydrogen sulfate, hence the name is potassium hydrogen sulfate. CuNO2 is copper (I) nitrite, and Co(NO3)2 is cobalt (II) nitrate.

Why do some cations require a roman numeral? Because they have more than one oxidation state, for example, Fe2+ and Fe3+, iron (II) and iron (III) respectively.

Do I need to memorize the polyatomic ions names? If the table of polyatomic ions is not provided during quizzes and midterms, then, yes, you do need to memorize the polyatomic ions names.
