A salt is an ionic compound made of a cation and anion. In salts, cations and anions can be monoatomic (Na+, Br-) or polyatomic (NH4+, NH2(CH3)2+, H2PO4-, CH3COO-, C6H5COO-).

For example, Na2SO3, CuNO2, NH4CH3COO. Notice that in salts with organic polyatomic cations and anions, the anion can be written first, for example, C6H5COOLi.
